Nutrition

Who can benefit from meeting with a nutritionist? Nutrition helps athletes go from good to great.  At Off-Season you get the help you need to fuel your training.  This includes adjusting your intake seasonally (periodization), planning and practicing fueling during events, creating pre-game and recovery eating plans, or adjusting intake in case you are injured.

Off-Season is unique in offering the services of a Board Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics, one of about 25 practicing in Massachusetts.   Click here to see the Top 10 Reasons to Consult a Board Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics. http://ow.ly/ExBOp

At Off-Season you can get help with general nutrition needs ranging from improving family meals to weight management to treating medical conditions such as high cholesterol or diabetes.  The Off-Season RDN is also trained to work with individuals dealing with disordered eating.

What is a meeting with the nutritionist like?

At the first meeting the RDN will gather basic information to help get an understanding of your lifestyle, your food preferences, your medical history and your goals.  Each session is quite different, depending on the individual’s needs.  At some sessions the focus is on providing information, such as which foods are high in fiber or what makes an effective recovery snack.  Some sessions involve problem-solving, such as finding healthy foods while traveling or fueling a 100 mile run.  Sometimes the sessions are more about nutrition counseling, such as how to manage cravings or to maintain a consistent focus on eating well.  The RDN uses motivational interviewing and cognitive behavioral therapy approaches to help you find solutions.

What do all those initials mean?

RDN: Registered Dietitian Nutritionist – Registration w/the Commission on Dietetic Registration; requires 4 year degree, planned clinical experience, and ongoing continuing education

LDN: Licensed Dietitian Nutritionist w/the Commonwealth of Massachusetts

CSSD: Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics w/the Commission on Dietetic Registration; 1500 hours of specialty experience, qualifying exam and ongoing continuing education

When can I see the nutritionist?

North Andover: Wednesday mornings and Friday afternoons, other times by arrangement with RDN

Watertown:  Friday mornings by arrangement with RDN

Can I use my insurance for nutrition consults?

We accept Aetna, Blue Cross, Cigna (most plans), Harvard Pilgrim and Tufts.  You usually need a referral, so check in with your plan and your primary care physician.
